I received an invite to Turntable today. Unluckily for me, I actually
found it quite addictive.
Turntable is part virtual world, part chat room, part game and part
online DJ/playlist tool (like Blip.fm).You can either enter someone
else’s "room" or make your own room. Rooms may define themes for
either music or behavior. Moderators can expel anyone who behaves
contrary to the established guidelines for that room.
You set up your own playlist, and if any of the five possible spots
for DJs are available, you can hop on one of the record players and
take a turn as a DJ. The audience votes for what they like, and you
get points. With points you gain permission to customize your avatar.
As an audience member, you can hop from room to room until you find
music you like.You can also chat with the DJ or other audience
members, get tech tips, music tips, remind people to vote, or grab the
playlist (which is displayed in the chat window as tunes change. I am
an old fogie and most of the Saturday afternoon DJs were playing
pretty loud rough stuff, so I found an almost empty room and played
music for myself. The one listener was AFK, I suspect, and didn’t
vote for the tunes, so I still have no points, although I had fun
listening to my own music choices.
The bad news is that you have to log in via Facebook, and have to have
a Facebook friend who is already in the beta. Facebook login means
other problems, too. Turntable is one of those Facebook apps that
demands permission to access your data whether you are using the app
or not. I don’t care for that. Even more suspicious, the Turntable
website does not provide a privacy policy or anything like "About Us"
or who they are, so I don’t really trust them.
The good news is that my teen came home while I was rocking out,
listened for a while, and decided my taste in music isn’t as awful as
he thought. He is considering giving me permission to DJ again. 😉
I did not make this Turntable room, but I have a strong suspicion who
probably did. If you want to join some folk playing acoustic, classic
jazz, old rock/blues, and other low key music, feel free to pop in.
Who knows? I might even be there.
