Question by Zach W: Help with a homeless teen?
I work at a homeless shelter for teens, ages 14 to 20. I see my fare share of young pot smokers and drinkers but it is never a huge deal. Occasionally, I get a client that is doing harder drugs and seriously endangering there life. Most of the time, I can convince them to go into a rehab program or can set them straight a little bit by bit. I have a new client that I just can’t seem to help. Please give me some ideas?

She is 17 years old, ran away from home, and lives 5 states away. She has been in the shelter for a little over a month now. She is always intoxicated, high, or under the influence of something. I would tell you what but I don’t even know. She says that she just takes pills hoping for a high or does what ever she is given. She has been raped twice (according to her and the police) and recently slipped on the ice, smacked her head, and was found on the street knocked out. I see her a couple times a week, as well as other staff, and none of us can seem to connect to her. She does not want help getting clean and is on a self destructive path. We are all very worried about her. We had a meeting just about her and could not think of anything that would work. Right now we are just continuing talking to her and keep offering her referrals to different programs. Anybody have any ideas on what to do?
I realize this may be a hard question to answer. Any answer give will be appreciated and considered deeply. Thank you.

I don’t think there is anything you can do until she wants to get help. It sounds like she will most likely end up dead from an overdose, or in jail if she steals to get money for the drugs or alcohol.

My mentally ill and alcoholic father kicked me out because he refuses to care for me and spend his money on god knows what.I am 18 and in a shelter in Nassau county Long Island. It is so bad and I have been crying all day. I have hardly any family and need a place to live now. I am severely depressed because of this and I dont want to saty here any longer. I am very close to my fiance and stepmother but they cant do much for me because of their circumstances. My parents chose to leave me for their wife and abusive bf. I am a very harworking kid looking for help. I am willig to stay anywhere but a shelter. I want a job and are looking and I wanna get into college but need help. Please anybody who knows someone who can help me. The shelter takes my phone and anything else away everyday. The only time I can have internet or freedom is at the local library. I have come across no help and are kindly accepting honest help. No fakes please. I pray everynight and cry. I have not eaten or slept. My mental stability is poor because of this shelter and my living. I want help and want to become stable. My parents have put me in this situation and I am looking for help anywhere. Please no negative comments. I am being honest. I dont have time for negativity.
My fiance parents are not nice just like most in laws. I only get my phone when i am out at the library looking for a job.

Please Call a helpline or go get some work at a mcdonals or something and go to a cheap motel everynight.
