Irlen Syndrome: A Teen’s Summary

posted in Society & Cultures |

A teen tells you about Irlen syndrome-what it is, its symptoms and how to get help if you have it. Irlen syndrome can cause light-based headaches, reading problems, eye strain, fatigue, poor depth perception, problems driving at night, etc. There’s two types of treatment: colored overlays, and tinted glasses or contacts. The official video for Madison Rose’s EXPLOSIVE debut single TEENAGE RUNAWAY “Teenage Runaway,” is an emotional power ballad that Madison wrote about her experiences trying to help a self-destructive friend. Madison feels that, “most people can relate to the emotional struggles that happen in our teen years and the feelings of isolation and loneliness that make us want to run away not just physically, but emotionally as well”. The message she hopes to convey with her song is that, “there are people who care about you, even if it’s a friend, you just have to open your eyes and see that they are there for you”.

    This is fascinating. All of the symptoms hit home with me. I’m a grandmother who has had issues with light sensitivity all my life, although my opthamologist told me that it’s highly unusual for brown-eyed people like me to be sensitive to light. That was a fair-eyed person’s problem. Bright light and flashing light were known migraine triggers for me. I intend to do more researh into this and see if I can get a diagnosis and follow it through to treatment and “fixes.” thank you!

    @AcousticJuice93 Definitely! The definition of “syndrome” is a collection of possible symptoms–you may have all, some, or just one. You only have headaches and some general light sensitivity, but nothing else. Headaches were my only symptom too. I’d check it out! It could help your headaches.

    Is it possible to have an extremely mild case of Irlen syndrome? See, I can relate to some of the symptoms you describe such as headaches while reading and I also seem to be more sensitive to things such as sunlight than average people, but it doesn’t add up since I have played ball sports my entire life and hand eye coordination and depth perception are actually my strengths and comes almost effortlessly.

    @RacoTaco maybe you need to see another diagnostician… you should not see any color… Please check into this… :)) Good luck

    I have Irlen syndrome… I love my glasses… It is wonderful to be able to read… I have 2 pairs.. One for light sensitivity outside and under the fluorescent lights, and one for indoors in the darker rooms…. I want to shout from the mountain tops at age 36 how happy I am that I can now read… I had a horrible time when I was in school and still got great grades.. It was just very hard for me… Thanks for the vid… Someday, I will get my happiness and spread Irlen too… :))

    Very interesting video. I learned about Irlen Syndrome from watching your video today. I work with children who have trouble reading. This may be something to consider testing for. Thanks for the info. Your video is quite clever and funny in addition to being educative. Well done. Congratulation! You would make a great reporter, actor, director, screenwriter. By the way, loved your co-star. :)

    @kye88

    Dave and Kye88, thanks a lot for the info. The glasses sound like an excellent solution. I am glad that it is working for the both of you!

  21. 21 On February 18th, 2012, DavidAccola said:

    @sonoki82 2. To decide on the tint color you meet with a diagnostician. The diagnostician has a large suitcase full of lens colors. You hold the different lenses up to your eyes and decide what’s best through an organized process of elimination. Then, depending on how much tint you need, you layer combinations of lens color until you find the right one for you.

  22. 22 On February 18th, 2012, DavidAccola said:

    @sonoki82 Thanks sonoki! 1. Kye88 answered well. I don’t see the tint my glasses at all; everything looks normal. Why? It’s like a cancellation process. People with Irlen are sensitive to certain wavelengths of light. The color in the lenses filters those wavelengths out and corrects your vision to be normal, so you end up not seeing the color if you have the correct tint.

  23. 23 On February 18th, 2012, kye88 said:

    @sonoki82 i think i can answer you question, i wear irlen too, when you look through the lense everything looks normal or as it’s supposed to be. it doesn’t look like the colour your wearing eg purple. for someone that looks through irlen glasses and see’s the tint it means that the colour is not for you. about choosing colour, its what feels comfortable and easy on your eyes, easy to see with, stabalises the environment etc. the tint choose you, you don’t choose the tint.

    hope this helps

    I have mild dyslexia and dyspraxia and I was talking to my friends about my frustration with reading and one of them mentioned Irlen Syndrome. I didn’t know what that was, but with your video, I understand it a lot more. And I don’t think I have it. You talk about light sensitivity and I don’t have those problems, I just have reading problems.

    Great vid, David. May I ask you: do you notice the dark tint as you go about your day or do you get used to it? Also, how did you decide on the color of your tint?
