Is there a limit to the size of a drive that can be defragged?

Question by Kumar S: Is there a limit to the size of a drive that can be defragged?
The vista defrager can never seem to fully defragment my 1tb drive. Is there a way to optimize the defragmenter or is it just beyond it’s limits?

No, it is just that the larger the drive capacity, the longer it will take to defrag.

It seems that you are having problems. Go to the link below and sequentially follow all the steps and then reboot. This should help you.

Basically, the built-in defrag utility is really meant for casual use as it is not desinged to defrag “on the fly” and it really can’t defrag while using the PC. It was definitely not meant for large drives.

Anyone who does a good amount of web surfing, downloads music and/or videos, creates numerous documents & spreadsheets, saves these, edits them, plays the music or video, deletes them when they are “old” (a weeky thing for music with pre-teens and teens), plays resource-intensive games or even does homework or any research to speak of, will find that the built-in can’t keep up with their use (nor was it really meant to).

Students (most of their homework and research is done on-line now-a-days) and especially anyone who uses their computer for work really needs a more dedicated solution that defrags on the fly, WHILE the PC is being used without draining system resources.

Below is a Top 10 Reviews side-by-side comparison of the best third party defrag solutions available, rating these according to their features and over-all performance:

The Gold medal winner won beacuse it was completely “transparent” and it was the only one that also prevents fragmentation (see the review).

Why is it good to prevent fragmentation?

Basically, that would drastically increase your hard drive’s life expectancy (especially since you don’t have to leave the system on all night — a much “greener” practice), not to mention it will also increase system performance. Check out what the review has to say on this.
