Why is it that I’ve never seen an intelligent person argue how great Twilight is?

Question by The Pencil: Why is it that I’ve never seen an intelligent person argue how great Twilight is?
On the chat area on Twilightsucks, people come in there saying, “You people must be gay for not liking Twilight!” Sometimes the regulars ask them, “Okay, tell us why Twilight is so great.” But all they can do is ramble unintelligibly.
I didn’t say people who like Twilight are unintelligent…I said people who argue that Twilight is great and there shouldn’t be haters never have an intelligent reason WHY people should follow their argument.

Just because someone likes Twilight, doesn’t mean that they’re unintelligent or stupid. Everybody has their own taste in books; why should you care? You don’t have to have an ‘intelligent’ reason for liking a book.

On both parts, it’s pathetic. It’s pathetic for Twilight fans to go into an anti-Twilight chat room and call them ‘gay,’ but it’s even more pathetic to make an anti-Twilight room in the first place.

Because people who are obsessed with Twilight aren’t that intelligent. They’re only like 10 years old. They’ll get over it once they realize what trash it is. You’re absolutely right dear :)

Why do we need to have incessant posts questioning the intelligence or lack thereof of readers from a particular book?

All this crap is getting old and is becoming quite juvenile. I am not a Twilight fan but this nonsense is just petty. It was funny at first, now it’s asinine.

Because to be honest the writing isn’t entirely fantastic and towards the end of the series it sounds remarkably like fanfiction. But the plot itself is alright, and that’s why I read it. It’s an average-ish-okay book, it just meets teens on a personal level – especially teenage girls – which is why we like it so much.

Why is it that it’s never an intelligent person on yahooanswers who always ask questions insulting people who like Twilight?

Dude get over it and move on. Do you not have something better with your life than waste time asking questions like these?

I am a fan of Twilight and I am not unintelligent. I just choose to spend my life doing more important things besides argue about Twilight. So please do not stereotype us by the minority of the group who are doing that. There is a huge group of people around the world who are fans and we are all different. Different people have different opinions. It’s great that people are defending authors and their books, and I have to admit that sometimes (okay, maybe more often than sometimes) people go too far. But if you’re trying to prove a point that Twilight fans are unintelligent, then the non-Twilight fans have gone too far as well. It’s only a book!

Twilight is a great series because it’s kind of an escape to an amazing world. Is that not usually the goal of the author? We fell in love with the characters to whom we can relate easily. It’s a very original story that keeps dragging us deeper into the books.

Was that intelligent enough for you?

Maybe it’s hard to not seem like your rambling over the computer.

I read Twilight a couple years ago, way before everyone was like “OMG I LOOOOVVVEEE EDWARRRDDDD,” but I must admit, I did fall for him myself so I can’t be all hypocritical, but he wasn’t the only reason I liked the two books. (There were only two books out when I started reading them).

To me Twilight was a way of getting out of the everyday world and getting into something that can make me have no worries. There was the possibility of living forever and never having to worry about anything, having unlimited time to get everything I wanted to done while having someone to love you unconditionally. Twilight gave me an out when I read it.

It also had that whole forbidden romance. I admit that I love reading about them, and Twilight was pretty much all about that, so naturally, I loved the book and I still do.

I probably sound like I’m “rambling unintelligibly” but I don’t know how else to put it. I love the story and the whole idea of living forever with the one you love.

I truely and vehemently hate twilight. But just for the sake of playing devil’s advocate, and because I enjoy a challenge, I’ll take a shot at explaining why some teens love twilight.

Twilight is a work of fiction that incorporates romance, action, suspense, mystery, and drama. It chronicles the tale of Bella Swan and Edward Cullen’s forbidden romance. These two unlikely lovers face an enormous challenge in that their love is dangerous for them both. Edward is a vampire, and though he loves Bella a part of him hungers for her blood. The suspense is thick, in that he must never loose control or else risk killing the one he loves. If he should slip, he and his family may be exposed and persecuted for something beyond their control. When another vampire discovers Bella and begins to hunt her, Edward and his family must risk it all in order to keep her safe.

Though the book is marketed at Young Adult readers, it has the ability to cross age barriers and will satisfy both teenagers and adults alike. Twilight is simply and yet beautifully written. The descriptions of Forks leave you feeling like you can almost smell the damp air and hear the rain falling. The reader cannot help but feel what Bella feels, and you find yourself falling for Edward even as Bella does.

The romance between Edward and Bella is both touching and compelling. There is a melancholic feel to their impossible love, yet at the same time they both are unwilling to give up hope that their relationship is not doomed. The book reaches a fever pitch of excitement as the romance between Bella and Edward turns into a frantic race to stay alive.

The imagry is vivid, the storyline compelling, and the romance passionate. Twilight is a classic that will be enjoyed by generations to come.

LIKE I SAID, I DISLIKE TWILIGHT. I was just attempting to put myself in the shoes of the fans. No thumbs down please.

EDIT: Look at that, a thumbs down. Jeeze Louis people, I wasn’t serious, I was just trying to prove that someone *could* intelligently argue in twilight’s favor, though few choose to do so.

I’ve seen a few people argue intelligently that they enjoy it as harmless fluff, they simply don’t care about its flaws and plotholes.

But I agree with you. I’ve never seen anyone argue intelligently that it doesn’t have any. Though I’ve seen a fair few people declare how intelligent they are and then state it has none – kinda shooting themselves in the foot as far as their intelligence goes :)

Excuse me, I’m a very intelligent person and I love the Twilight saga. Everybody has their own taste in books, so you may not like the saga but I, personally, cannot see why not. It has everything! Romance, suspense, humor, great characters, and it’s written very well. With every great book, there are going to be people that don’t like it. But you say that Twilight fans can’t come up with a great reason for liking the book. Well, we don’t really NEED reasons, they just are. However, can you come up with a great reason for not liking the book? for hating it so much? I mean, I can understand disliking it a little but hating it enough to go on a website? Why!? It’s pathetic!

Okay, look, I’m not too offended since you didn’t really completely insult me. You didn’t say I was unintelligent, you just asked a reasonable question, and sometimes I agree. A lot of twilight fans only reason that they like the books is, “Edward’s hot” or “It’s so romantic”. Those aren’t good reasons to be obsessed with something! Not everyone says, “Your gay” to people that don’t like Twilight, like me. It’s your perogative to dislike the books, and the thing is, the twilight fans that go to those, “I hate twilight” sites or chatrooms, shouldn’t be in there if they’re Twilight fans, because it’s a group for anti-twilighters to vent, and they should be able to have that without being interrupted. I would not do that, and I only join chats that are made for debate between the two sides. In fact, I’m friends with an anti-twilighter I met online on a chat, and we’ve agreed to disagree, and I’ve even agreed on some of the things she disliked, like the unhealthy relationship. I am aware of that, but I do have intelligent reasons to like these books. I could even agree with you on some things, so don’t label me just yet! Hope we can agree to disagree on some things!

Twilight is actually a reasonably good book, but it’s not a objective question. Whether or not it’s good is dictated by what you are looking for, once you get past a certain quality vector. If you are looking for a piece of mind-candy, it more than adequately does the job. The plot is solid, fairly standard teen romance stuff. *shrug* it’s nothing to get worked up about in either direction.

However, if you are looking for deep thought provoking literature that moves your soul and changes your life…why are you reading Twilight?

When you come right down to it though, calling a chat ‘Twilightsucks’ and calling the people who choose to be there ‘gay’ are equally juvenile things to do. Both are simply aimed at evoking a response and not a particularly intelligent one.

I am a fan of the Twilight Saga. I am not obsessed like some of those crazy obsessed fans that run around saying “OME, Edward is like so totally HOT!!” that really annoys me. Because they just make people hate some other fans that do not do that. Like you said some obsessed fans have nothing that intelligent to say. That is because they only read the book AFTER the movie came out. they ruined it for the rest of us who were fans Way BEFORE the movie came out. I admit, some things in the books were not that great, but to me it was still a good book. Not the best, but still very good.

Remarks like “You must be gay for not liking Twilight” are ridiculous. Everyone is entitled to their opinion. What i do not understand (please dont call me stupid for this) is why SOME people who are not fans, try to diss the books and say that it is the worst book. You Are entitled to your opinion, but PLEASE do not answer Twilight related questions if you are going to diss it. go to a hate website for that.

Some fans like me for example actually have a reason for liking Twilight. By the way, the Movie was seriously bad.

    My reason is:

I love fantasy books. I like books where the author makes something so absurd into a great read. Yes i know that things in some books can never happen and that is why i read.

To me, the love and attraction between Bella and Edward is fantasy like (obviously), he is so in love with her, and some how she is in love with him too. Edward is made to sound so perfect yet, kind of dangerous. The tension that is built up throughout the books made me want to read more. I just really like the way Sm wrote the books and it made me want to read more. The idea of a vampre falling in love with a human and living out the rest of their existance made me want to read more.

Some of the things in the books kind of upset me though. but i still enjoyed the books.

So please, to the haters, dont answer Twilight related questions if you are just going to diss it and say that anyone who likes it is stupid. just say that in your opinion you did not enjoy the book.

I get really annoyed when NEW Twilight fan go around saying Twilight is the best, if you dont like it then you suck.
So TWILIGHT FANS, KEEP YOUR RUDE COMMENTS TO YOURSELF!!. YOU MAKE IT SEEM LIKE ALL FANS ARE THE SAME. WE ARE NOT!!

    sorry about the rant.

Oh god, they’re giving the Twilight fans a really bad name. Don’t pay any attention to them. They’re probably just 15 year old girls who are in love with Edward Cullen and vampires in general. It’s really sad.

Personally, Twilight is one of my favorite books. But I’d never go on a site and “You people must be gay for not liking Twilight!” First of all it’s really imatture. Second, it’s really, really weak. Some people just don’t seem to get that everyone is entitled to their own opinion.

Ok I get you’re not calling everyone who loves Twilight unintelligent, but I could almost say the same thing about people who hate it. I’ve NEVER heard a good argument from an intelligent individual on why Twilight “sucks” sooo much.
Regardless if you think no one has defended the books well enough, the fact of the matter is Twilight is a phenomenon! It’s a multigenerational wave sweeping the world, so really, regardless if they’re THAT awesome or not, you HAVE to give them and Stephenie Meyer credit for grabbing the attention and adoration of millions of fans.

Also on the note of all the people who dress up, that could be argued about all great cult-followings: Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, Rocky Horror Picture Show, heck even Spider-man movies I saw people dress up, and I bet at the Watchmen premier we’ll see people dress up there too. Imitation is the largest form of flattery.

So yeah I agree with a few others, get over yourself and find something that’s a REAL issue to rag about.

Simple. Because there is no intelligent argument.

What I’ve seen is fans saying the books are really good and Meyer’s really descriptive. But that’s seriously the extent of it. I’ve never seen a *good* reason for why Twilight is good, and it’s because there is none.
