It’s bad news for single guys hoping for easy pickings this Valentine’s Day.
The more that women want sex, the more they heighten their standards when picking short-term mates, a new study has revealed.
This is in direct contrast to the figures for men, which find that men will lower their standards according to how much they want sex – or the more ‘sexually hyperactive’ they become.

Psychologists from Bar Ilan University in Israel, studied 78 male and female students.
They were asked to fill in a survey that asked the extent to which they each agreed with statements such as: ‘My desire for sex is often stronger than my partner’s’ and ‘Having sex isn’t high on my priority list’.
The students were then placed on a scale that classed them as somewhere between ‘sexual hyperactivation’ (heightened sex-related desire and worries) and ‘sexual deactivation’ (suppression of sexual behavior and thoughts), as published in the Journal of Research in Personality.

They were then presented with videos of men and women talking about themselves and their lives, and asked how much they would want a short term relationship with them. The participants in these videos had previously been rated for attractiveness by a separate panel of 60 people.

The study on mating preferences is titled Misguided attraction: The contribution of normative and individual-differences components of the sexual system to mating preferences.
It found that among sexually hyperactivated compared with deactivated men there was some increase in desire towards attractive women, but there was a very large increase indeed in desire for a short term relationship with women who had been rated as less attractive.
The men were effectively at the stage where they considered almost any female a potential target.
The Times reported that the authors of the study said: ‘Sexual hyperactivation seems to make men less selective and make women more selective,’ in a conclusion that superficially appears to contradict the laws of sexual supply and demand.
For men, feeling sexually hyperactivated and wanting short term relationships meant increased efforts towards their ‘sexual system’s goal’ – namely, having sex – for women the goal was subtly different.
While hyperactivated women might want sex, from an evolutionary perspective their requirement from a fleeting relationship is more complex.

If it is going to be a one night stand, potentially creating a child they would have to look after on their own, at the very least that child should be of good genetic stock.
Consequently, they write, ‘most women are expected to rely on "feminine" strategies… preferring dominant and attractive men as short-term mates’, as reported in The Times.
This fits in with hypotheses about optimal male evolutionary strategies, based upon the idea that men generally have to contribute less resources to child rearing. “Men, being the less investing sex, are expected to be less selective than women,” the psychologists said, writing in the Journal of Research in
Personality.
Women who were sexually hyperactivated did exhibit some increase in interest towards men who had been rated as less attractive, but unlike men they showed a far greater increase in interest towards the most attractive mates.
Rather than narrowing, the result was an even larger gap between their relative interest towards attractive and unattractive males.
