Question by Darth The Northman (Ride To War): What Decade Were You Born In, And Is It Your Favorite For Music?
Darth comes from the 60’s and actually it’s only My 4th favorite musical decade. I prefer music from the 70’s 80’s and 00’s all over the 60’s. I was just wondering how everyone else felt about it.

Do You feel that the decades You grew up in influence Your music tastes? I know the 80’s were a mega-influence for Me music-wise.

By all means have an R&P discussion about it, all answers are appreciated

I’m from the 90s, but that is certainly not my favorite. They had Power Metal which was good. They did have some good instrumental stuff from Vai, Satch, etc. They did have some good indie stuff, but the 90s just don’t compare to the other decades of music, I think.

My favorites?
1) 70s
2) 60s/80s
4) 00s
5) 90s

What do you think? Answer below!

I was born in 1995. I love the 90’s because that’s when Oasis formed. I would say my favorite musical decades would be (in no order) the 90’s, 70’s, 50’s and 60’s. Each had epic bands/singers.

I was born in 1993. Not a lot of things I listen to are from the 90’s. I prefer the 70’s, 80’s, and 00’s. I would have to say though that most of the good bands of the 00’s formed in the 90’s, so that sort of makes it a good decade for music, but there weren’t a lot of good bands that were mostly active in the 90’s in my opinion, or at least not a lot that I have heard.

    Hey Darth.
I was born in the late 70s, and it isn’t, but my theory is that people (in general of course) gravitate to the music from their late teens and early 20s. Kind of the wheel house years (but I’m mostly referring to the music that they were into, not necessarily the music of that time, but more often than not I think the average person listen to mostly stuff that is contemporary to them). This is true for me. I’d say that the 90s is my favorite decade.

I do think that the stuff that surrounded me when I was younger did a lot to shape the stuff that I’m into. I got Costello and the Beatles from my mom (among a ton of other stuff) and I got Zeppelin and the Doors from my dad, and Tom Waits though I wasn’t going to be able to really appreciate it until I was around 15. My siblings got me into the sort of new wave and ska and post punk stuff, as well as indie rock in later years, and of course 80s pop from all around me. All of this stuff can be seen in different areas of what I listen to now.

Hey, thanks Darth. It means a lot. The feeling is totally mutual my friend.

You definitely make a good point KP. It seems like now-a-days, and I think it may be in large part due to the information age getting the word out more and more, also since we’ve been using the same medium for long enough (between cds and digital media and it’s easy compatibility) it’s easier to get exposed to a wider range of music. It makes sense that we would be looking at a more diverse landscape, with more celebration of the older greats by more people. It’s funny how things like that can happen. I guess it’s easy to take for granted, being brought up in a period where it wasn’t quite like that yet. There were people who were into classic rock, a lot of people at least liked it a little, but probably not like today. Also, I think you can factor in that the MTVs and VH-1s and what have you are nothing like it was in the early-mid 90s. I think the sort of alt rock, rap, and pop was better represented in our day. Represented with a lot more variety with shows like 120 minutes and Yo MTV Raps and hell, even stuff like Buzz Clips. Now you get 30 seconds of the same 20 videos for a couple hours a week and reality tv. Just kind of stream of consciousness rambling.

I’m still kind of growing up so I would say the 00’s definitely have influenced my music taste especially since the 00’s are my favorite. I don’t think the 90’s influenced me especially since I was so little then. I mean, back when I was 7 I was listening to the Backstreet boys, thank god that didn’t stick with me!

I actually dislike most music past 1991. Not saying I shut it all out, but there just isn’t much there that keeps me entertainted.

I’m more of a 60’s 70s, to mid 80s guy musically. All of my favorites come out of these eras. I think I got all of it because my dad is a big fan of those bands, obviously, and it just stuck with me. Growing up in the 90s was actually pretty gruesome for music, those were wierd years for music. If anything, I was looking for something to grab hold of, and I just happened to find it while riding in the car with my dad.

    Happy Wednesday, Darth!

I was born right in the middle of the 70s, and while I have a great deal of appreciation for the music, I can’t say it’s my favorite. As a fan of the 90s, though, I can hear the influence that the music draws from that time period. I can hear the 80s influence as well.

The 80s and 90s were the times I was more conscious of all of the music around me, but it was also the soundtrack for growing up. Both decades have songs that I can link to specific moments and periods of childhood and adolescence and I think that makes the music, as a whole, resonate more with me.

I don’t see how the decades you grow up in couldn’t influence your music taste. It’s either going to do it directly or indirectly. Say, for instance, you’re one of those people who claim that there isn’t any good modern music (time frame is irrelevant), you’re going to be driven to another time period for music.

For me personally, yes. Early teens in the 80’s, late teen in the 90’s, and both decades had their own peaks for genres that I love.

    so…….
    1) 80s
-Metal was EVERYWHERE, Thrash was born as was Death
    2) 00s
    – Musical Evolution has made Metal BETTER than ever.
    3) 70s
    – Birth of Metal and Punk
    4) 60s
    – First half pretty well sucked, 66 0n Rocked!
    5) 40s
    – The best Jazz, Big Band and Swing music
    6) 90s
    – Grunge reintroduces the world to Mediocre boring music, Hip Hop and Boy Bands strike back. NuMetal. Only saving aspects were teh happening overseas that kept Metal alive.
INDIVIDUALLY, there were some great albums, but music and the Radio on the whole were complete and utter FAIL.

I think Prof Anger makes a good point, in that when it comes to the our teenage years. But teens today get exposed (potentially) to such a diverse array of music now, compared to when You or I were growing up, that I think we do see more overall openmindedness. Though there are plenty of kids more than happy to listen to the Fail-Pop of the 90s-00s.

I love listening to the classics and remembering a time when I had zero cares in the world, that probably makes me someone who holds on to the ‘good ole days’ through music. For me it is about being young and carefree. I admit that I like the psychedelic stuff for zoning out and losing track of time and relaxing also.
I also love 80’s Metallica and Motley Crue. It reminds me of boom boxes and again not much to care about. Or high school.
So I agree with you, I am heavily influenced by what music I like in relation to when I grew up. I seem to dislike what is out there and new to me in my adulthood.
