Question by Jeff: How can a 30-year old woman get cancer of the cervix and uterus?
I’m 38, and so is a former classmate that I just met up with on Facebook and chatted with last week. She’s divorced twice, and has a 12-year old son with her first husband. She contracted cervical/uterus cancer when she was 30, and needed a hysterectomy, so could never have any more children.

What could possibly cause a woman that young to have this kind of cancer and need a hysterectomy?

I know 5 such people. It isn’t as unusual as you think. Cancer does not have an age limit.

One of her former partners could have infected her with HPV. Or the cancer happened due to an unrelated cause. It is hard to pinpoint cancer to a particular source. Contrary to your belief she seems to be in the right age group for this cancer.

cervical cancer is caused by HPV (a virus) which is an STD… She must have been having sex right and left and that’s how she got it. (it takes years for this virus to cause cancer, so she must have had it in her teens)
it is good that she had a hysterectomy… because when the cancer is advanced we cant do hysterectomy anymore so i guess she is very lucky.
Hope that answers your question :)

I don’t know but I recently I have heard a lot of women aged around 30 having this problem. My cousins girlfriend has the same problem (although she has never had children) and is facing having a hysterectomy and she is 30 too! It’s really strange…

Hmm. She could have been exposed to HPV at a young age, like teens or earlier if maybe she was molested, and that could cause cervical cancer that spread to uterus too. Or she could have a hormone imbalance like PCOS or endometriosis that caused uterine cancer that spread to her cervix too. Or none of the above–sometimes cancer just happens. I had ovarian cancer at 16 with no sexual experience or problems at all. Babies can get cancer. There is not an explanation for everything in life.
