Males tend to have a competitive alpha male attitude (from the testosterone I presume). Then again, a lot of women aren’t portrayed as victims. Good example is Samus from Metroid.

and Master Chief Spartan is a girl in Halo…you’re an idiot…are you saying men are never captured, killed, or hurt in video games…women’s studies is a joke because it teaches you to think like a sexist and not a realist.

My favourite game is Haunting Ground – a complete ‘damsel in distress’ one, creepy as hell if you’re playing at night. Oh and Fatal Frame where you have to take pictures of ghosts…

I am not muc of a video person so I cannot comment on those. But in video games, it really just depends on the game. In the Grand Theft Auto games the portrayal of women was not just as victims but as worthless and disgusting. Dialogue such calling women “skanks” and “hos”, beating women up, purse snatching, etc. DId it really add to the game? I suppose for some it was a way to act out, to release rage or anger towards women, which by the way is one of the things the critics don’t like to admit about video games, they are actually conducive to releasing anger in a positive way. Other games however make the women the heros, Silent Hill, Resident Evil are a couple of examples of this. The women are so not victims, they kick but and emerge victorious (if you can play the game). Even better are games like World of Warcraft where the gender of your character is relatively unimportant to your quests, more important is the skills you give the character and how you proceed on your quests (yes I am a WOW nerd), these types of games are probably the best for equalizing gender in video games.

I barely watch music videos, so I couldn’t say.

In video games, I think it’s largely because the whole “save the princess” thing is just one of that old plot-lines that just won’t die. Though there are a lot of female characters as victims still, most game developers know enough now to include at least one competent female character – though unfortunately, that female character is generally dressed in the equivalent of a glorified bikini.

Because women choose to be victims. They have to power to not shake their rears in the music videos but they choose to do it anyway.

I’m not sure what you mean by video games.

You know for once, I’d like there to be a female main character for Grand Theft Auto. Have the game makers not seen the movie “Gone in Sixty Seconds” or “Burn Notice”? I hope she wouldn’t do like sexual favors or anything like that to get ahead in the game either.

Maybe that’s some the these producers’ problem, the ‘damsel in distress’ days are way over. They should portray more strong women who grabs a hold of things that would captivate a greater female audience. As a woman I don’t want to be portrayed as weak and always need saved. I want to be portrayed as someone who can hold their own and do what I got to do when the time arises.
