Question by Catheryn: I want to know all about the 1960’s. What would be a good recommendation for a book to read?
I Googled it but i couldn’t find anything on a book about the 1960’s. I want to know all about the 60’s. What they wore, what cars there were, what they did in their free time, music etc. I want to be an expert and I have to be in order to write a story i am writing. what would be a good book about the 60’s that i could use?

Are you wanting actual history books…or fiction?

I’m not sure that there is 1 single book that encompasses the history of the 1960s…there was simply TOO MUCH going on in the 60s to put it in 1 book.

If you’re looking of literature, I suggest the following

The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton
On the Road by Jack Kerouac
To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee
One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest by Ken Kesey

If you’re into movies

Dirty Dancing
Eddie and the Cruisers
Woodstock

For pop culture you could try youtube.com look for episodes of the Ed Sullivan Show…

    I can’t name any books and I’m hoping someone will, but I have a few suggestions that can help you overall. Like listen to some music made in the 1960’s, watch a few movies made during that time, and even look up youtube videos of news clips during that time. You can see what types of crimes were happening, the major events that grabbed everyone’s attention, etc etc. Maybe you can even find various local newspapers via online database from the 1960’s.

    Hopefully someone will also suggest some books written in the 1960’s that place during that time so you can get a feel of the way kids spoke, teens, adults and the elderly. I’d also suggest looking for documentaries about the time and made during that time.

    A book about the 1960’s will help, but I think experiencing some of the media and things that they experienced will help a lot. You may even want to go back to the 1950’s or even 1940’s or 1930’s to know where your characters come from since those that are adults today were influenced more when they were children (in the 70’s 60’s and so on).
