   because they really did a develop cutting edge product – supported by phenomenal software and powerful marketing. when they stepped into this market, the way they introduced the product was brilliant basic and simplistic but trendy and sleek all at the same time. i think since they were the fore runners in this area the product can only get better and i believe they will keep the lead . apple and othe rmanufacturers were shrewd enough to flood the market with accessories and to tweek the product to push it to it’s full capability by allowing other file type storage like calendar, contacts and of course VIDEO is awesome. they have also allowed for both video and audio playback thro your TV and stereo or fm radio – so very versatile and it eliminates the need to lug CD’s, dvd’s datebooks and stacks and stacks of files. i set up mp3 players as a side line for people and have experienced many of them and by far i favor iPod all the way. a class act is tough to compete with.

   Personally, I hate the iPOD, but mostly because I hate the iTUNES model of syncing songs back and forth. I want more control over what goes on my player.

   As others have pointed out Marketing Marketing Marketing. And it also doesn’t hurt that they were pretty much the first to mass market an MP3 player. Heck, most people still don”t realize that an Ipod IS an MP3 player.

   Also, they did saturate the market with accessories that the kids and teens eat up. Personally, I could care less what color it is and all that as long as it plays music.

   As for your last question I’d say the answer is no. Although it may be a while before someone passes them the gap is closing more and more each day. People are finally starting to wake up and realize that there is nothing an Ipod can do better than say a Zune or Creative player. They all have Video, Radio, photo, etc and the only that’s “more” with an Ipod is the price.

   Also as the music industry continues the lawsuits you will music piracy begin to drop a little and people will want more legal music dl choices than just Itunes.

   “The iPod is worst of the major MP3 players on the market, completely and totally over-rated and over-priced. They have managed to convince a bunch of mindless sheep that they have the biggest, bestest (yes this was a deliberate misspelling), and coolest product on the market. Sadly this is not the case and these people are too blind to see the truth of things. Maybe someday they’ll be able to see through the fog to the light but I seriously doubt it.

   To sum it all up, iPods suck.” (I really need to put this response on a macro. ^^)

   I hope at some point that people will wise up, but when you have people willing to pay US$ 500+ for the iPhone with a service plan and even more without one or over US$ 300 for an iPod video which doesn’t have the features that the competitors have at that price or less, I seriously doubt it will change anytime soon.

   The poster right below me obviously doesn’t get the fact that iPods weren’t the first nor does he get the fact that the iPod really doesn’t have that great of, if any, features. Again we see what kind of sheep buy iPods.

   2)They have a lot of models (ipod video, ipod nano, ipod shuffle)
   3)They have a lot of accesories
   4)Great design.
   5)The itunes software and market are just great
   6)And yes they will remain as #1 in the mareket because the ipod has become very popular.
