Why do only news people say violent video games harm teenagers?

Question by Question Mark: Why do only news people say violent video games harm teenagers?
Not so sure how to word this question. But whenever there is a mass shooting done by a teenager the news always says “video games caused teen to go on rampage” or something along those lines. But I never really hear” video games caused 40 year old man to go on rampage.” Why is that? Has there been any cases of adults going on killing sprees because of violent video games?

It just sounds like a good excuse. Instead of talking about deep psychological problems, bullying, etc. they would rather find a quick scapegoat.

If someone plays Halo 4, they won’t become a serial killer. There has always been violence before video games and there always will be.

NO ONE ever goes on a killing spree ***because*** of violent video games. Games don’t force anyone to kill another person. You have to have that desire on your own and then maybe playing games doesn’t do much to help it, but it is not causative.

Several studies have been done. There’s no evidence supporting the ridiculous notion that video games make teenagers go on killing sprees.

Now exposure to excessive violence and gore at a very young age (like < 6), without parental supervision or guidance, can definitely distort someone’s outlook or desensitize them to all that. But then the parent is to blame for failure to watch their kid and know when they’re mature enough to handle that kind of exposure. Still, ultimately, it takes one mentallly f*cked kid to go ahead and do that. There’s a reason the vast majority of gamers don’t exhibit homicidal tendencies. It’s because they have a grasp of basic morality and are emotionally mature enough. And have all their marbles. Edit: I hate reading other answers sometimes..some people just give their uninformed opinion and state it as fact.. @jessica. The average age of gamers was 37 until recently, when it dropped to 30. Besides. 16-year-olds have the capability to know better than act out what they see in a video game -_-

When you play a video game, where you kill people. Your mind tell’s you that it’s okay to do that because you know it’s all fake. I don’t think that 40 year old’s play as much as 16 year old’s do. But some people play so much that they get tired of the fake killing. And want to feel what it’s like to kill a real person. And then the new’s report to us saying the same thing over again. Instead of reporting on how gorilla mom’s care for their babies. lol

well first cause most 40 years olds have enough common sense and are mentally stable and/or have found out about what mental problems they have before they reach that age. the media likes to blame video games for almost all these mass murders because video games are easy to blame for something like that. and not very many people will stand up for video games. us gamers dont have some sort of celebrity spokesperson to defend us like alot of other industries have. what the media needs to blame also then if they’re blaming games, is the movies, tv that the murderer has watched, what music they listen to, and also what books they have read and i bet you 99% of the rest of us have either watched, listened to, or read something that that murderer has. does that make all of us murderers? most likely not. these sick people have serious mental health issues and thats why they have done the things they have. not cause some game “told” them to do it.

If a teenager goes on a killing spree, video games are very rarely the only source of influence to kill. Games are not the only thing to blame. They are usually a crappy excuse for bad parental supervision at young ages. The teenager might have had a “minor” mental issue, or perhaps one that no one ever knew about, that became more… outspoken. Every part of a person’s lifestyle (how he was parented, if/how he was bullied, and so forth) is a factor to why people, of all ages, do what they do. The person may not have ever let anyone know about things like bullying and may have gone insane because of that.

If you’re gonna start blaming video games when a teenager goes on a killing spree, then there’s no reason you shouldn’t blame every kind of entertainment he had access to, like TV, music, books, etc, and how well his parents monitored how he lived. The only thing I can think of that makes games a more reasonable thing to blame than movies and all that, is that in games, usually, you’re the one killing. Although, it’s true that you are more mature and mentally capable of keeping the fake from the real, so you usually won’t see “40 year old gamer kills people, because his video games influenced him.” in the news.
