What are the main things I need to look for when buying a laptop?

Question by HorseChick94: What are the main things I need to look for when buying a laptop?
I’m looking for a good laptop that will be used for average teen things. It will need a lot of memory because I take tons of pictures, download music, Myspace/Facebook/Bebo etc.. I don’t really care what color it is, but I would prefer an Apple or Dell laptop. I’ve seen words like HPz on the product discription.. And I don’t know much about computers technically. Can anyone offer advice?

For a teen…

the price…

if you want to play 3d games on it, try and find one which doesn’t have Intel based graphics…

if you want to use it for doing the odd piece of work, I’d recommend one with a big screen and high resolution (so you can fit more onto the screen)…

i much prefer macs, but I bought a cheap Compaq laptop that I could carry around and not worry about it being stolen or lost.

What do you think? Answer below!

Macbook is a good choice, but if you want more memory, you will have to pay additional 200 dollars for 500 gb, which wont be needed for you. The least they come in is 160 gb, which is 2 times the space i use. Plus, its very good and simple, and cant get viruses from *cough* limewire *cough*.

don’t get a dell they suck….mine is pretty much junk and its 6months old….Things you should look for is atleast 2GB of ram….you will need 160GB hard drive or more…..processors you don’t really need to worry about sesne it seems your using it for internet and downloading and the basic one is pretty good when your spending 600+…your probably going to windows vista but if you buy one now they will give you a free upgrade to windows7 once it comes out….If you get a macbook or macbook pro you pretty much got everything you need in terms of specs…you should only really need to look for 2GB of ram or more…and 160GB hard drive or more….I recommend the Macbook pro any size….I DO NOT recommend the macbook air….its alot slower…

You should buy a laptop with a huge RAM which controls storage space and if u want pictures and videos to look HD get a good video card. (ATI Radeon would be good) And by HPz I think u mean Hz and GHz which is the speed of your laptop. You should be able to find a Dell that matches these descriptions….Good Luck!!

Pictures and music and Facebook does not take up memory.

Heavy video gaming does require much memory.

    Your needs are fairly basic.

You should go find a 2gb memory, 200gb hard drive, 15.4″ screen, 3 or 4 USB ports, memory card reader slot (for camera pics), etc…

This should be $ 450-$ 600 laptop at the most. Anymore is wasting money.

Your needs could probably be met with one of the new Netbooks, versus a Notebook/Laptop.

Netbooks are in the $ 299-$ 399 range, just smaller screen size and no cd/dvd drive. That’s why there so great for taking them with you.

I buy Toshibas almost all of the time. Local stores discount better on Toshibas and they are a workhorse laptop that last forever.

I’m neutral on Dells and Sonys.

I don’t like HPs (or Compaqs now since they were acquired).

For you i would deffinetally reccomend a white apple macbook for various reasons. All the things you asked for a mac speacializes in. Also, it very reliable and there are only about 4 viruses! The macbook is also a very fast machine, it can handle almost anything. It is also great for photos and comes with iLife, which you would use alot. But if you low on money i would also reccomend buying a refurbished white macbook, for they are just as good as new. I hope i helped!

The two questions that will determine the starting point for your search are: 1. What is your budget? and 2. What will you be using the machine for? Be as specific as you can on this: If you are an avid gamer, you will need lots of processing power and a good video card (expensive). If, on the other hand, you do relatively simple things like the activities you described in your question, you don’t need a super expensive machine with the latest and greatest processor and video card. If you travel a lot or use the laptop mostly on battery, pay attention to weight and battery. If you have specific needs for inputs or outputs make sure you those are available (for example, if you want to hook your laptop up to an AV system, you might want an HDMI output. If you want to transfer video from a video camera, you might need a Firewire (1394) input. Having said all this, here are some specs I would look for: Memory: 2GB or more, Storage: 160GB or more, Wireless “N” connectivity, DVD writer (you might want to back up your pictures and/or music) Webcam (even if you presently don’t communicate using a webcam, you may want to do so later), Processor: Dual core (Intel Core 2 Duo). Also, if you select a Windows machine, be aware that Windows 7 comes out October 22. Some (but not all) vendors will give you a free upgrade to Windows 7.
I also suggest you check various review sites such as CNnet.com. (see Link below) I have recently been looking at an HP HDX16T (see second link below). This machine has pretty much everything I would look for – but it may be overkill for you and, after all, the new laptop has to fit YOUR requirements.
