Danny was asked to the Prom by a senior girl. He hadn’t shown any interest, but last night he got his tux and was excited to show us. Jamie said he looked "hot", but Sara refused to agree—you can’t call your brother hot! In the end, we all said he looked "sharp".

I’m planning on taking photos this Saturday, but it’s tricky! My camera metered for the black jacket, but then the shirt and vest were blown out. Anybody have clues to capture dark and light detail when the clothes are so contrasty? I can do it, but I’ll be working with impatient teens who won’t wait for metering.

Help!

I don’t have a problem saying my bro looks good. I like the buttons.

I’ll definitely agree with "sharp", a fine looking young man!

As for the metering, that’s one thing I’ve never mastered. I’ve got a bunch of photos of a friend’s wedding that were either over- or underexposed depending upon whether I was metering off the bride in white or the groom in black. Even going halfway between didn’t help…

This is the reason I say no to taking wedding photos when friends ask… I’d hate to leave them with lousy pictures of their special day!

    – Yes, his vest is natty!

    – If I got him shoes, he wouldn’t wear them!

    – I have the same concern. I’d hate to ruin photos of such an important date.

    – He looks just like I did at his age. Poor thing has to grow up to be me.

    – Yeah, that Clem is a funny one. But looks aren’t everything! Danny is pretending to not know any of the plans, to prevent me from showing up and capturing him and his date/group. :-(

well, I would say to do a faux HDR on it. Take the shot tending towards the underexposed (don’t blow out the whites).

Afterwards, copy the image twice, to one of them, fix the exposure to really get the details in the darks (you will have more information in the darker regions than you think) and then to the second copy, make it really dark so that you get the details in the brights.

stack the three images with 30% transparency each, and flatten. You should end up with an image that both shows detail in the dark and the light.

Depending on the amount of exposure editing you do, you can end up with something very realistic or way blown out of reality (if you go reeeeaaaallly dark and realllly light).
    hope it helps

    – He does, poor dear.

    – I think I have an underexposed version of this (at home, not here *sigh*). I’ll give it a go. Thanks for the advice, it sounds good.

    – He didn’t reject her. I don’t know why a senior would stoop to invite a junior, especially since she is pretty cute!

    – Well, he has been pretty acquiescent lately, so maybe he will let me know. OR ELSE!
