Question by Evie: What do people like to read in teen novels?
I have my characters and my setting but I was wondering what things people actually find engaging in teen novels. And if you even mention vampires or werewolves, I’ll shoot your parents.

In teen you mean young adult novels, I like to read mystery, suspense, romance, and gothic horror. I agree with you I don’t like vampire and werewolf crap I hate twilight, maybe I’d only watch it because taylor Lauther is spool hot! Well anyways yeah some of my fav books are the luxe series, uglies series, elsewhere and rebecca.

I like mystery, romance, fantasy, and angst in the young adult novels I read. I also like supernatural elements like magic and superpowers, as well as dystopian societies (LOVE THEM) I especially love the gone series by michael grant, harry potter series, divergent by veronica roth, hex hall by rachel hawkins, and the hunger games by suzanne collins. I read mostly fantasy-ish books because I’m writing a fantasy novel of my own :)

I like a teen novel that really makes me think and has a real impact on me for days afterwards. I like teen novels that are about real things that I can relate to.

Additionally, no more dystopian novels please!!!

Just because vampires and werewolves have become a trend, doesn’t mean you can’t do something different with it. Don’t rule it out, publishers are more likely to publish books that fit the current popular trend.

    Anyway.

In a teen novel, I’d want to read something I can relate to. The main character has to be flawed and have someone she can confide in, like a best friend or a boyfriend. Even a parent.

Comedy is quite popular nowadays, especially chick literature. Check out books by Sophie Kinsella, very popular.
