Question by Lionel: I facilitate a teen group in the inner city part of Los Angeles, I want to keep the kids interested, any ideas?
I started a youth group in the inner city part of Los Angeles about 7 months ago, in an area where gangs are very active. The kids range from ages13-18. They are good kids who want to stay away from gangs. I am running out of ideas to keep them interested. Any thoughts or ideas out there? I would appreciate the advice. Due to state budget cuts and the economy funds are limited.

Maybe…
Big football/ soccer game
Or try and get some government funding to fund some DJ music equipment.
Organise a big party buy some cheap food and drink, get a stereo and party
A film day like a day of watching the latest films
Photography day
Hope these ideas helped in some way good luck with it all.

How about asking for their input to this exact question. They’ll feel more a part of it, and you may be surprised at how intelligent some are.

You might take a look at this program and see if there is anything you can borrow. Look at the Summer Program, too. http://coralcenter.org/
I heard from kids that they really liked the college counseling and it actually got them excited about college and made them believe it was an option.

Doing movies and music is great at the CORAL program, but if you don’t have the equipment, what about a magazine? They can do comics, articles, etc. Scan and put online for their families and friends to see.

How about yoga? Maybe you can get someone to volunteer to come in and teach or use a yoga DVD. It really is a stress releaser and they might actually end up liking it (happened with my son’s class at school)!

Watch a movie/dvd and then discuss it. Try great older movies they’d never watch themselves. (And new movies, too.)

    Book club / discussion group.

Do a play, have the kids write it. They can each write a few sentences about themselves or their families and then perform it.

    Dance.

Do community service projects, it’s empowering to help others, especially when maybe you think you can’t.

Gardening, cooking. Something new to broaden their horizons. Also, have you looked through a Boy Scout book? They have so many different activities.

    Good luck!
