Whatever beautiful medium sized mixed breed you fall in love with at a shelter : I like border collies or german shepherds personally I have a cross of each of those and they are great dogs : I got them from the SPCA

maybe like a lab mix or something. Go to the website of your local shelter humane society or animal care and control they usually have pics and a little info about the animals they have available for adoption. Maybe you will fall in love with one and have to have it

Personally I would go to the nearest animal rescue center and rescue a dog. Youll find the perfect dog there I can assure you and not only will you save his/her life youll also be sure to not accidentally provide for funds for a purebred dog that actually comes from a puppy mill or something.

Mutts are perfectly sweet and pleasant dogs that are just as cuddly and awesome as any other pureblooded whatever. I see no reason why your future best friend has to be a specific breed Good luck with your search and I hope you find a fantastic dog.

I wouldnt recommend teenagers getting dogs as they do not have the time and lets face it have other things to do than taking care of a dog.

That said go to a shelter and browse the dogs there and find the best one that suits you and your families needs and abilities.

If your a first time dog owner Id probably recommend something easy like a lab. Or at least thats what i looked up.

u say u want a mixed breed eh?
well I adopted my mix from the animal shelter and trust me there were so many mixes. U should adopt urs and find ur perfect match. Actually dont get it from an animal shelter instead from a humane society. Humane societies dont put their dogs to sleep they wait for someone to adopt one.
    Hope I helped

Think about a few things first….

1 How much time are you going to dedicate to the dog? As a teenager you have your friends school extracurricular activities studying and your whole social life. Are you the only person to take care of the dog?

2 How much clean up do you want? The bigger the dog the bigger the poo. A german shepherd is NOT a medium sized dog. My sister has one that is 90 pounds.

3 How high energy or low energy are you? If you get a high energy dog you will need to run it play with it and train it extensively. If the dog is low energy is that ok with you? Are you looking for a jogging buddy? Make sure the breeds energy will fit yours. Do your research on the breed typically if it has the title of Hunting dog or Working Dog you will need to run it and expend that energy that was bred into your new pooch.

4 How much dog can you afford? Large dogs are capable of eating 40 pounds of food per week Medium dogs if kept on a good diet will eat that in a month small dogs will eat 20 pounds in 46 months.

5 What happens when you graduate and go to college? Who keeps the dog? Dogs are not cars you should not even think about adopting/buying a dog and being its main reason for living then leaving after a few years.

6 Are you prepared to be the cleanest person from the waist level down? A puppy will chew and investigate anything and everything it can. Even 1 to 2 year old dogs will have episodes unless properly trained

THATS EASY A mongrel from a shelter. Mutt Mongrel Mixed Dog SAME THING. Ask your parents to go to the Shelter and you pick out a dog. Is that SO hard to find out? You do know… MUTTS ARE 1oo RANDOM UNPREDICTABLE IN EVERYTHING. NO MUTT LOOKS ALIKE AND NONE WILL ACT ALIKE.

There are really three types of dogs Working dogs retreivers huskies etc protection dogs german shepherds rottweilers dobermans pit bulls and companion shitszus pomernanians etc.

You need to decide what kind of dog you want be honest with yourself and how much exercise and protection you want. If you have had a dog before get a puppy if not an older dog will be easier.

If you are willing to make the commitment to raise a dog you will experience the joys of partnering with an animal that can teach you many life lessons. If not you will disappoint yourself and an animal.

Where you get him from is up to you. If you have found a breed you really like find a good breeder.
If not spend some time visiting the shelters and see what they have.

    good luck.

Kyle has asked you the right questions. We just received one of our dogs back after 5 years. His owner graduated from High School and he went off to college. Mom and Dad did not want to care for the dog.

It depends on your budget life style and personality. I recommend that you really put some thought into this because this dog will be with you from 1015 years go to the public library or a bookstore and look for a book on picking out dogs. There are some very good ones for first time owners and they have a list of breeds and their characteristics what they look like their personalities and what kind of life style their owner should have activebusykids etc. There are also websites like this. You also have to think about how long its going to live because if you are a teenager your going to need a place to leave it when you go to college.

Always get a dog from a breeder or the pound. Never a flea market or petstore. They keep their dogs in horrible conditions JacksAquariums keeps them in small cages which are often dirty and dogs that appear healthy at flea markets a lot of times are really sick and costs A LOT of money to nurse them back to health. The benefits of a breeder is that if you want a specific kind of dog you can ask to see the parents to see if its going to be the right size color etc. Also a breeder provides papers and documentation of shots and will often pay for the dogs treatment if it were to become ill and ultimetley replace it.
If you want a dog that is not purebred I recommend you go to the pound. The benefits of a pound are that you are doing the best thing possible for a dog and are an amazing person Other then that they also provide vaccines and usually have spayed or neutered the dogs this is really the best thing for them. I volunteer at a dog shelter and it is so sad to see the same dogs there year after year : If you do choose a shelter adopt from a nokill shelter this means they dont put down their dogs if no one adopts them other shelters will put them down after a certain amount of time without adoption.
I think a collie would be a good dog because their obedient beautiful and energetic. The down side is you have to groom them a lot. I also love boxers because they barely shed but they have a lot of energy. If you live near a lake or river a labrador retriever would be good because you can take them swimming. I dont recommend a terrier because they can be very snappy and tend to chase anyting that moves. These are just a few breeds off the top of my head but there are hundreds and each have their own personalities. I have a Newfoundland who is 165 pounds slobbery and black loves to swim and is very affectionate. I also have a tiny Pomeranian who is 5 pounds an orange fluff ball and is so funny even my older brother who has a passionate hate for dogs dont ask me why loves her. I love both my babies for different reasons and they fit so well with my family but i did SOOOO much research and went to over 5 breeders for each and even waited a month until the Pom was ready. It takes a lot of training the first couple years and the vet is pretty expensivebut your left with a best friend.

Good luck hope I helped and I hope you find a wonderful dog.
