At a Human Rights WatchSLOTXOseminar, athletes attending the Beijing Olympics were reminded that Don't talk about human rights.
On January 19, 2022, Channel News Asia reported that Athletes who will travel to the Beijing Olympics Be warned about speaking on human rights issues while in China. for your own safety at a seminar organized by Human Rights Watch
The rights group has long criticized the International Olympic Committee (IOC) for its decision to host the Olympics. citing what the Chinese government treats the Uighurs. and other Muslim ethnic groups the United States considers genocide. China has denied allegations of human rights violations.
“There is still not enough protection. That leads us to believe it includes athletes,” Global Athlete group general director Rob Kohler said at the seminar, adding: “Silence is collusion. And that's why we're worried.”
“So we advise athletes not to talk. We want them to compete. and make noise when you get home.”
Article 50 of the Olympic Charter prohibits any political, religious or racial expression of any kind in areas related to the Olympic Games. or other places
Ya Chao Wang, a senior humanitarian researcher in China at Human Rights Watch, said Chinese law is very vague on crime-related issues. which can be used to prosecute allegations related to freedom of speech
