Key with any truck, especially a used one: Is who is going to periodically maintain and service it.
I would go to where you are most likely to get service work done, and ask them (truck service technicians / service manager).
I would look for a used GMC/Chevy extended-cab four-door pick-up truck, maybe "zero" to five or six years old.
I would not purchase a brand-new truck (unless someone else was paying for it - business/organization), the first owner gets hit with the largest depreciation. The second you sign a new vehicle's purchase paperwork, it is worth about 1/2 of what its sticker price was, and if you finance it - you are paying more than the sticker price.
A long time ago, I would have recommended Dodge RAM, 3500 before Chrysler got bought by Mercedes Benz. I would recommend a F-150 if Ford did not have their current financial ups and downs. Toyota Tacomas and Tundras have reasonable reputations, but purchasing one would not be "Buy America".
Which leaves GMC/Chevy, a large (relatively stable) company with reasonable trucks.
FYI - diesel engines in general are better maintained than gasoline engines, due to the somewhat lubricative properties of diesel fuel compared to gasoline and a few other characteristics. ------------------------------------ I Google'd +"best truck" +"towing trailer" +dependable
