Right now i have a Sony VAIO VGN-NR285E/S. i know what kind of ram i need, where to get it, etc.



I currently have two 1Gb chips in, and am running windows 7 RC.



i don't know a lot about computer hardware, software is more my specialty. Since i'm using windows 7 32 bit, upgrading to 64 bit if i need to is easy.



So if i want to install 2 2gb chips of memory, what would i need to do? Would i need to upgrade to a 64 bit OS? improve my processor? or do i just install it and that's that?

just install it then turn the laptop back on when you are done. nothing complicated. you only need 64-bit if you are over 4GB

You just the RAM in and the OS detects them automagically.

I'm sure you already know that 32 bit OS's have a RAM memory limitation -- you'll likely have to go 64 bit if you want to use all of the available memory.

You cannot upgrade to a 64 bit system using 32 bit hardware! It totally depends on how much RAM the motherboard supports. You may already have the maximum!

Your Vaio uses "DDR2 667" RAM. So when you shopping for RAM, make sure you buy the 667 (speed in mhz) and ddr2, and you should be good. As far as the capacity (1gb or 2gb) it is up to you.

However I think your sony only has 2 memory slots. You should check the manual first for the following before going out and purchase RAM.

1) You motherboard supports more than 2gb of RAM
2) How many memory slots you have, if you only have two, you need to replace one/two of your current RAMs

Next, if you want 4 GB of ram or more, you will need to upgrade your OS to 64 bits. Because 32bit OS will only recognize 3GB of RAM even if you install 4GB.

So go out and buy 2 DIMMS of 2gb RAM (DDR2 667) and replace the 2 DIMMS of 1gb RAM you have currently. upgrade your OS to 64 bits. and plug and play.
