You need to ensure that you have used the correct cable (I'm assuming IDE), set your drives to master and slave and you have them in the right order.

Ensure power is connected, ensure you didnt plug it in backwards, put it on another ide connector on the motherboard if you have it. ensure that your primary is set to master, and the secondary (new one) is set to slave.

If your trying install the hard drive on ide interface make sure you set one drive to master and the other to slave. If you have on idea which one is which, just look one the end-of-the-IDE-cable. Plus make sure that the power cable to the drive is plugged in all the way.

take out the second hard drive make sure the cable is in the motherboard the right way round, connect it the master harddrive and see if IDE0 recognises the drive make sure the second hard drive is set to slave, if you're not sure then dissconnect dvd or cdrw from IDE1 and connect second harddrive to that connector on board bios will detect whether slave or master. Pick which drives you want as slaves and masters, suggestion IDE0 Primary master hardrive IDE1 primary master CD just incase, secondary slaves as appropriate

there are a few issues here.
is the second drive on the slave pins.
check the new drive info label to locate the slave position.
take the jumper connector and follow the diagram on drive your old drive will be the master next drive you slave.
select the right position on the cable for master position or slave.
note the colour of the ribbon it will all one colour and one end different.this side must be in the correct position otherwise its backwards no read/ wright will be obtained.
are you using the lower connector for the right drive.
bios wont recognize two units on the same cable. if not configured correctly..
after you have done this the pc will look for the boot segment on the hard drive with the operation software on it.
hope this helps you
after you have done this check the setting in the bios with the auto segment this will solve your problem.
