Does it go by related artists or genres, that are in the songs information? Does it take the information from the itunes database, or is it more complex than that?

It chooses songs by genre that is similar to one song.

iTunes collects information on what kinds of songs people have, so it looks at what songs other people have that also have that song.

Pretty simple. When you buy the song off of iTunes, it already has the genre and artist info.
