I want to sell my computer and buy a lap top instead for travel. I bought my dell desktop about a year ago for around $900. If I sold it on lets say ebay or amazon, how much could I get for it? Or would I make at least enough to buy a $500 lap top? Thanks!

The used computer market is SATURATED. I'd say take it to Staples or Best Buy and ask for a trade in. The amount you would get is sub-optimal to sell it, but it would help to know the specs.
