Processors do not work like that. If you had a dual-core CPU that was 3GHz, you cannot simply combine the speeds to get 6GHz. It is just a dual-core CPU that has 2 cores running at 3GHz.
When you are overclocking, you are increasing the speed of the processor (making the MHz higher). You do this by adjusting the FSB of the processor; which in turn increases the speed (in relation the multiplier) and ultimately making a faster computer in general.
For the question in additional details: It depends on which processor you are wanting. If the processor you are wanting is the same socket as the one you currently own, then you can just simply replace the processor. If it is a different socket, then you will need to buy a motherboard that supports the socket required.
