When you add your website to most directories, they ask for a reciprocal link (a link back to them). Does Google and other large search engines see this as a bad thing or a good thing (linking to directories)? Does linking back to the directories hurt or help your website? Oh and what about linking to websites that are primarily for link exchanging?

In most or case, more backlinks to your site the better page ranking you will get.

However, Google specific said that be aware of where your links are post. Some of the web directory or spam site are on the black list of Google database. So if you are on those sites, your ranking will be down.

Linking to directories or other websites does not hurt at all. However linking yourself to low page rank sites (0-2) can hurt you. If you link to a website or directory I suggest checking out its Google page rank and Alexa rank to determine how reputable that site is. The better quality sites you link to the better you can improve your ranking.
