My provider have given me a list of 20 keywords that are most searched for relating to my product. They said include this in the meta tag on each of my pages. Im a little confused...I know I need to optimise my page for maybe 2-3 keyword or keyword phrases, but if I have 20 keywords, can I include the full 20 in my metatag on the home page, and then just use 2-3 out of this list to optimise my home page for?

Any then for the other pages on my website..pageA, b and C etc..Do I copy the same 20 keywords into the metatags, but then choose totally seperate keywords from that list in order to optimise the next particular page depending on what my page is actually about.

I look forward to your advice, many thanks in advance

Hi John, thanks for your advice. I dont have a specialised SEO offering from them, its more of an advice following their analysis. Before going back and asking I thought I would see what advice I could get from here. I heard about the lack of keyword metatag use by the search engines as I have been researching heavily on SEO. Just hoping now I can boost my position. Cheers

Personally I would find it difficult to optimise any page for 20 keywords (words or phrases?) and I have spent the past 10 years working in SEO.

The meta tag that I suspect your provider is talking about is the keywords one - this is not used by the major engines and you do not need it (although I sometimes add half a dozen words into the tag if the client insists that they must have a keyword meta tag).

Each page should be optimised for different phrases so I would not copy the same list of phrases into each set of metas.

Why not go back to the provider asking what you should do, I am always happy to talk to my clients about SEO as should any decent specialist.

Meta keywords are a place to try to broaden the number of keywords that bring up your page beyond the 3 you've optimized. Actually meta keyword strategies are a bit out of date, when you consider that google ignores meta keywords, after concluding there were used too often to manipulate the search engines with untruths.

Some advise smaller sites to not bother to optimize for top ranked keywords, instead picking niche keywords with less competition, that give you a better chance of making it onto page 1.

The Google keyword tool will provide keyword rankings. Also examine the search result count for each keyword phrase entered inside quotes in your search engine to measure the competition level.

You can get the number of backlinks to the top ranked results with Yahoo Site Explorer, to learn how many of these essential links you would need to get similar ranking.

Its a good practice to target maximum three keywords on one page, targeting more than 3 keywords may harm the site. If you are targeting 20 keywords, target some keywords on internal pages. Write a good content for the site and, and get quality back-links for the site.

20 keywords is way too much! You'll never get the results you're looking for if you're trying to optimize for 20 keywords. Try using less than 10 and you'll get better results.

You can also write articles about your products or services and submit them to article directories like http://www.contributecontent.com

They allow you to link back to your web site using the keywords that you want to optimize for. This SEO technique is very effective - just make sure you submit an article that is relevant to your keywords and products or service.

First of all let me tell, you cant optimize a page for 20 keywords And no use of adding mete tags. Now a days search engines are using meta tags only for categorizing the page if it is there in body too.

Another more relevant question is which metatags are you optimizing and what are their limitations. Initially, the <title> metatag is the first to be indexed and it should contain "generic" keywords which best describe your goods and services followed by a geographic target, usually, your place of business, a street intersection, city, state, county. And limit all entries to no more than 65-70 characters. Then comes a <description> metatag which consists of 35-40 words to form a single complete sentence; not merely a listing of keyword(s). And finally, there's the <keywords> metatag which consists of up to 15 compound or plural keywords.

Good luck!
