I was laid off a couple months ago and decided to change careers. I live in California and I have been collecting unemployment ever since and am scheduled to run out in August. Having searched for a full time position for several months and coming up empty, I recently decided to set myself up for freelancing opportunities and filed for a business license. I haven't worked at all yet, and I am still looking for a job of course, but I believe that advertising myself as open for freelancing might bring open more doors, and in fact, have a few freelance opportunities coming up this month. On an interview, I was told that it is ok to defer any income while collecting my unemployment as long as I hand the check back to the company so that they could officially pay me at a later date so that I could cash the checks after my unemployment runs out. I have heard this before, but am not sure if it is true. Is there a way to be sure that this is legal and that I won't suffer any repurcussions? Thanks! TSL
