While cleaning out the dark recesses of my pantry, I have discovered an opened bottle of apple cider vinegar. Heaven knows how old it is, but since vinegar is basically wine that has already turned (and wine is fermented juice), can it get any worse? Is it still safe to use? I know it won't kill me to buy a new bottle (and I probably will anyway) but I am curious. Thanks!

It gets a sediment in the bottom when it's old, and the flavor gets very strong and bitter over time, due to evaporation. I'd suggest you throw it away.

Vinegar can actually turn bad -- it starts smelling more like paint thinner and the taste isn't so great either.

Just about forever, but there is an old adage that says, "When in doubt, throw it out"

Even wine goes bad...so there is a flaw in your theory...throw that sucker out....besides,,,vinegar is cheap...I'll tell you what it wil do...put it in a bucket or bowl...throw in your tarnished, brass metal thingies...say old drawers handles or pennies,,that sort of thing....let it sit overnight and then just wash with a rag and soap and water the next day...willl gleam like you wouldn't believe...

You might not want to use it for cooking, but you can still use it to scrub the sink or toilet. Make a paste with baking soda or pour the vinegar and baking soda into the toilet.

Suggestion:any vinegar from apples should be kept in the fridge.
Discover yourself if you still like the taste after some time:it gets more bite and sometimes it gets bitter. Not better.
THROW THE OLD ONE OUT.HORRIBLE TASTE.

Perhaps forever, if sealed (or tightly resealed). In glass, not plastic.

I have some glass bottles of cider (and other) vinegars at our vacation cottage which I originally purchased over 30 years ago
that have not been fully used up yet, and they are still good. But I have noticed that other vinegars packaged in plastic bottles that we similarly used up slowly started to spoil after a couple of years, taking on the taste of the plastic.

I believe I have read of instances of vinegar discovered in and recovered from submerged ancient Roman, Greek and Phoenician shipwrecks that was still perfectly good.
