John Robert Schrieffer, who taught at the University of California until 1991, was sent to jail for 2 years after pleading no contest to vehicular manslaughter. Schrieffer killed a man and injured 7 others when his sportscar, doing 100mph, hit a van. Scrieffer, 74, had made a plea bargain and was only going to get 8 months but last Monday the judge decided otherwise after listening to relatives of the victims and told Schrieffer: "I think you need a taste of state prison." Schrieffer was driving with a suspended license at the time of the accident, had 9 prior speeding tickets, and was said to have fallen asleep at the wheel of his Mercedes-Benz. Schriefer received the Nobel Prize in physics in 1972 with Leon Cooper and John Bardeen. Source:
