Third baseman Alex Rodriguez from the New York Yankees has been named the American League's Most Valuable Player. It is his second MVP award in three seasons. Rodriguez beat the Red Sox's David Oritz to take the prize. Like the NL's Cy Young Award, the American League's MVP is decided through balloting the Baseball Writers' Association of America. Rodriguez received 16 first-place votes, 11 second-place votes and on third, accumulating 331 points. On beating Oritz, Rodriguez said "I would certainly trade his World Series championship for this MVP trophy. That's the only reason I play baseball. It's what I'm consumed to do right now."
