Europe's rocket, the Ariane 5-ECA, has finally launched from French Guiana last night, despite a technical glitch that delayed the launch for days. The Ariane 5 is Europe's most powerful rocket yet, though it crashed on its maiden voyage. The rocket was launched with a thrust equivalent to ten Concorde jets. On board the Ariane 5 is a Spaceway 2 satellite, and the Telekom 2 spacecraft. The satellite will be used to deliver HDTV to US cities. Arianespace CEO Jean-Yves Le Gall said: "This clearly proves the very high reliability of our launcher. More than eight tonnes were injected into orbit tonight and this is a world record."
