According to a report by the Conference Board research group, consumer confidence in the United States in November rose on the confidence index to 98.9 points, compared with just 85.2 in October. Analysts had expected a rise to about 90 index points. The report speculates that the a drop in the price of across and better job prospects across the board fueled the rise. Gas prices had risen in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, having a negative effect on consumer spending. Lynn Franco, the director of the Conference Board consumer research centre said: "While the index remains below its pre-Katrina levels, the shock of the hurricanes and subsequent leap in gas prices has begun wearing off..."
