A rally by local residents in the South Sydney suburb of Cronulla turned into a riot on Sunday with participants in the rally attacking anyone of middle eastern appearance and going on a rampage through the beachside community. Simmering racial tensions have been blamed for the riots, 2 lifeguards at Cronulla beach were bashed by men of Lebanese descent last week and many residents complain of ethnic gangs causing trouble at the popular surfing beach. NSW Premier Morris Iemma said the behaviour at Cronulla was "disgraceful, cowardly and will not be allowed to continue, in Cronulla or anywhere else". Source:
