The world's largest automaker General Motors announced yesterday that it will be almost tripling the number of cars it will produce in India because of growing demand in the market in South East Asia. GM is struggling badly in the United States, recently announcing the slashing of some 30,000 jobs in North America, as well as the scale back of United States production. Currently, Indian production stands at 25,000 units per year. GM insists the increase is not a matter of outsourcing US jobs to India, saying: "The creation of research jobs here in India is consistent with the need for us to invest in the markets where we sell our products."
