Over 1m people evacuated to get out of the way of the category 5 hurricane, Rita, now said to be the 3rd most intense hurricane ever recorded. The barometric pressure near the hurricane's eye is said to be lower than Katrina's making it more intense. The storm is sustaining winds of 175mph is moving west at approximately 9mph, and is said to be 370 miles wide. "This is the first time people have responded the way they have," said the mayor of the evacuations. Officials in Bay City were preparing to shut down the nuclear plant before the hurricane arrives. A New Orleans evacuee who was rescued from her roof is now having to flee again. "I feel lifeless, I'm just going through the motions," she said. Source: http://www.cnn.com |
