The population of reindeer in Greenland is rising at a rapid rate, according to wildlife officials in the country. Since 2000, the number of reindeer has grown by 25 per cent in western Greenland alone. No reason was given for the boom. Some biologists have said that population numbers are a whopping 6 times more than the country can sustain, and as such local authorities have issued open hunting licences for the animal. Government officials said the hunt hasn't helped. Mads Brinck Lillelund, from the Directorate for the Environment and Nature said: "At some point food is going to get so scarce that a very large portion of the animals die of hunger. It's unfortunate for hunters, who rely on stable numbers." Source:
