The animal equivalent to the Victoria Cross, the PDSA (People's Dispensary for Sick Animals) Dickin Medal, was awarded to 32 pigeons, 18 dogs, three horses and a cat called Simon between 1943 and 1949. One was awarded to a Collie named Sheila after she helped rescue US airmen who had crashed in Northumberland after a bombing raid during WWII. Battling blizzards, she and her owner John Dagg rescued 7 of the 9 men from their plane. John Dagg received the British Empire Medal and Shiela the PDSA. Both medals are to be auctioned off later today and are expected to fetch £30,000. Source: news.bbc.co.uk
