Question by BadHairDayz: What products are good for a black teen with frequent acne breakouts?
I am a black teenager and I have frequent breakouts on my face. I think i have pimples and zits but i definitely have a lot of black heads. I have tried proactive, clean and clear acne cleanser and i have been to the dermatologist but the products don’t work for long. Does anyone know about another product i can try to clear my face completely? And does anyone know about products that can remove the dark scars left over from bumps?

Retin-a from the dermotologist is the best thing that I have that found that would work – it gets rid of dark scars, and black heads, but it takes time to work – at least 12 weeks – basically, it forces all of the blackheads and pimples out of the skin – so you break out worse for a while – but then you have a layer of skin that is like a babies butt underneath.

Its been miracle stuff for me.
Amlactin Body cream is similar – a chemical exfoiliant that causes the skin to shed quicky. I use that on my face too – it will sting for a couple days, so if you try it, expect that

Here’s what I do to help it:

    1) Wash my face twice a day and try to stay away from oily foods like pizza & fries.

    2) I know you are tempted to use some really strong cleansers to help control the oil, but don’t… the harsher the soap, the more your skin will produce oil to replace what you stripped away. Use a gentle cleanser like Phisoderm or Dove…. on a regular wet washcloth in the morning and on a facial exfoliating pad at night. Wash & rinse your face with lukewarm water, but at the end splash your face with cold water to close the pores again.

    3) You’re on the right track with the oil absorbing pads, I use those too and they’re awesome!

    4) I use Proactiv refining lotion for a moisturizer. I only buy the moisturizer, not the whole kit because I only use the refining lotion… I tried the whoe kit before & it doesn’t work for me. The refining lotion has benzoyl peroxide in it to help kill the germs that cause zits and the moisturizer sems to satisfy the pores on my face enough so they don’t make that much more oil. It’s a bit expensive ($ 28 a bottle), but only use a pea-sized amount after washing your face and it will last for at least 3 months!!!

    5) If you use make-up, try one of the powder foundations, they really help soak up the oil. In the past, I tried almost every liquid foundation and all the do is look steaky on an oily face and clog my pores more. I use Bare Minerals (about $ 28), but when I don’t have enough money to buy it I get Loreal Bare Escentials (about $ 12). You can get the Loreal stuff at any local larger grocery store or pharmacy where they have a makeup section. Loreal works just about as good, but I would suggest getting another brush for it & putting it in another container, cause the one it comes with is too messy. Oh… and don’t let it fall on your clothes, it sticks to them and it’s almost impossible to just brush or wipe off.

All this stuff worked for me… I hope I helped!!!
