Q&A: Is it okay to learn multiple dance styles at once?

Question by CariC: Is it okay to learn multiple dance styles at once?
I want to learn dance. Like a lot. And the dance school where I want to go only offers each style once a week for the beginning level but I want to dance more then once a week.

Will it be okay to learn multiple dance styles at once or will that be harmful and cause me to mix up the techniques of each?
Are there any two styles that should not be learned at the same time?

No. If you learn more than one dance style at a time the dance police will come and take you away to dance prison where you’re required to sit in a chair while incredibly dancey music blasts through the stereo and you’re not aloud to move a muscle. It’s hell. Don’t be an over achiever. It’s not worth it.

Actually it is always best to start with ballet and add to that as you gain dance technique. Ballet is the foundation of almost all of the other dance genres but most important it builds overall dance technique that makes all the other styles much easier to learn. It is not so much that it will confuse you, but if you put all your attentions into ballet first, you will do so much better than attempting to do many different styles of dance. A dancer trained in ballet for a year and then starts jazz, will be better at jazz right from the start than someone starting jazz without ballet first as jazz us based off of ballet technique but just not done using turnout.
If you start with three ballet classes a week (in a good school this is possible) you will be using your dance time more productively. Tap is not based off of ballet and is an exception if you wanted to start with that at the same time. However again, ballet trained dancers are overall better dancers and that even helps with tap too. It only isn’t as essential.
The truth is, many of the better recreational dance schools wont let you start in other styles without taking ballet first. For professional dancers the bulk of their training is in ballet and codified modern dance, Even the dancers you see in music videos and on tour with singers dancing street jazz and hip hop. Many never even took hip hop classes but can dance it easily as it just becomes different choreography for a dancer with strong ballet and modern training.

*If the school you want to go to only offers beginner ballet once a week, then perhaps you should look into a different school or ask if you can take beginner ballet classes with other age groups as well as your own. For example if you are 13 or 14, you could take teen beginner ballet and also take class with the younger 8-11 year old beginner ballet students. Maybe they would let you also take the adult beginner ballet class too.

*EDIT: If this is just for fun and you really don’t care how well you dance, you can take all styles together. Just don’t expect to do as well as the dancers who were trained in ballet before taking other styles
