As for me, I never watch music videos…I don’t think they are “necessary” to appreciate the music. I don’t think they make part of the musical aspect…

Well if I don’t understand the song I kinda assume the video will help seeing as I’m a visual learner. Also it helps me learn the song faster cause I have the video playing in my head to go along with it

Well, some are good and illustrate the song, some are bad and just have dancing girls (I.E. NEARLY EVERY RAP VIDEO UNDER THE SUN). Pork And Beans is a GREAT music video.

I think it depends. For some songs it’s just bunch of slutty girls and it doesn’t really help at all. However, for some songs, watching the video gives you a bit more of a clue as to what the song is about if you’re struggling to understand. An example of this, would be songs by a band like…AFI…where their lyrics are sometimes confusing. The video can help clarify. In other songs, videos help add a visual aspect to the song and make it more powerful.
So all in all, it depends on the song.

I don’t really watch that many music videos honestly…I mean, they’re entertaining sometimes if they’re really good. But most of the time, i just end up focusing on the song more.

I don’t think videos are necessary for the enjoyment of a song, and I sort of feel like it’s a dieing art form. But, there are some fine examples of videos that are works of art…
    Hurt-Johnny Cash
    some of the radiohead videos….

Well yeah music videos are not compulsory for understanding/appreciating/liking the song, but depending, they can be fun and interesting to watch, especially if it involves the band performing the song.

it really all depends if the video enhanced the song’s meaning or something, or if it just killed it. i have a few videos i know that absolutely killed a song, while i know some that have really made the song…perfect

Well, they used to be pretty important to me in the 90’s. For example “Violets” by Hole and “Tonight” by Smashing Pumpkins. Also, I agree with Michael L, “Hurt” the version from Johnny Cash was important because it revealed how sick Johnny was getting and the looks of saddness on June Carter’s face (wife). It was very raw and hard to watch, and I cry everytime I see or hear it because it reminds me of my late father who passed away last year.

They can make songs better, as cinematography is an art.

A great example is this song. It’s a great one, and an even better video:

Both the song and the video are really expressive.

They are not necessary to like the song, but they can express the song in more dramatic ways and can truly be a work of art. Example:

Most of the time, they destroy the music. Sort of like a sequel to a great book, a sequel that never should have been written- it may have been necessary, but that doesn’t make it worth witnessing. It separates you from the initial feelings you experienced while listening to the music. Makes it more the band’s experience than yours…

I don’t even watch them. I like to have my own meaning with songs, and sometimes the videos ruin it.

The videos, honesty, don’t matter one bit. The song is what really matters. Like for example, let’s say you have an outstanding music video, but your song sucks….<–Horrid.
