Question by Miss Timid: What are some pros and cons of allowing teens to date?
Additionally, would you allow your teen to date? Why or why not? What age is appropriate to allow them to start dating?

Yes I think its a good idea to let them date.
That way they can start to learn about relationships (what should and shouldnt happen) and can be careful etc before they are an adult and have nothing to fall back on.

A person who is never allowed to experience dating wont understand how to spot the signs that some guys are just after sex.

But if they start dating as a teen, they have their parents around constantly telling them ooh dont do that or this etc.

Honestly, I would, it’s not like they aren’t going to anyways, I would allow it at 12-13, it honestly brings happiness, and lets them socialize.

It is always inappropriate for young teens to date i.e. under the age of 16. By date, I mean going out on their own as a couple. Our youngest daughter had boys she liked that she called “boyfriends” at 11 and 12 years of age, but that’s all it was, they didn’t spend time together outside of school or go on dates.

For going out with another person, I think 16 is the minimum age and they should understand that very very few teen romances work out into lifetime marriages. I do know a couple who started thinking of one another as boyfriend and girlfriend at 13 and are still together and very happily married at age 49. : )

    Wishing you well.

It could go either way. Best way is to allow freedom, but have guidelines. Meet them, and know where and what they are doing, but don’t follow or stalk them. Let them hang out, but let them know school is first. And if you thing they are sexually active get condoms or put her on birth control. if they are or get sexually active, you wont have control over it. Will allow my son to date but he will know my limits on things. If you deny you teen dating they will most likely sneak around.

My son (and his wife) agreed when the girls turned 14-years of age …. they could invite a boy to the house. The rules were as follows; they are only allowed to sit together in the ‘family’ areas…living room, kitchen and dining room…..NO messing around (just talking)…..plus one of the parents had to be home. If they want to get the boy more…..their parents have to meet the other parents.
Now that the twins are nearly 16-years of age…..neither one of them are really interested in any boy. They spend their spare time studying because they both want to go to college and have a career. Their youngest sister just turned 14-years of age and she must obey the same rules. All three girls would rather have ‘family’ time than to be alone with a boy.
