Apolo Ohno is the best equivalent in terms of medals.

Not in terms of medals no. But in terms of personality Shaun White just sparkles. Theres an air of child about him that says Lets go try something really naughty and dangerous like running with scissors times 20. And its all delivered with a great big smile and often a good belly laugh and that amazing hair. Hes like Huckleberry Finn almost grown up but not quite. Its like he just heard a very funny joke hes just dripping with audience appeal. He seems to be having such a great time and he makes you think Hey I want to be having a good time too Plus hes making about 6Million a year so whats not to like?

Not even close. White has 2 of course with only one event per Olympics he can never hope to compete with the likes of Phelps.

The Michael Phelps of the Winter Olympics would be Bjorn Daehlie or Ole Einar Bjorndalen of Norway like Phelps they have/had the advantage of having multiple events to compete in in each games Daehlie was a cross country skier and Bjorndalen is a biathlete.
