Question by car: What are good ideas for a mental health awareness workshop?
I am creating this for my school, so it has to be teen friendly. Also, I already have some ideas, but they are mostly group discussions and fact sheets. What I’m looking for right now is some fun activity/game that could deal with mental illness or suicide and one could discuss afterward. Thanks!

If you are taking a look at psychosis at all get them looking at voices and all other sorts of hallucinations and delusions. After that pair the group up and ask the pairs to spend 5 minutes chatting about their lives. During that time you and some volunteers will wander about speaking into people ears. Now and again put 2 of them on one person! They will maybe sing and hum, or make rude noises, others will whisper rubbish and the killer is the one that joins the discussion they are having with undermining stuff, saying maybe “she hates you really you know. She’s not interested in what you’re saying, she knows you’re rubbish and scum. Soon she’ll be telling everyone else here what a waste of space you really are. You look crap in that yellow outfit anyway, why did you put that on when it makes you look sick and fat.”

I’m sure you can come up with a few more good lines for the whisperers. I’ve done this workshop myself and it’s impossible to concentrate on what the other half of the pair is saying with anyone undermining you and if you add someone humming in the other ear you can forget any chance of conversation.

It’s a great way to get them to understand why psychotic people can’t often focus or seem distracted and lose the plot of the conversation. Ask them how they would cope with that going on in their ears all the time.

After they can list all the different ways it made them feel or how it stopped them focusing. Add new topics on this vein following on, how would they cope sleeping with this noise, what about voices who say that food is poisoned and it tastes bitter as well (taste hallucination) how will they be able to eat anything at all. If they go to take a shower and the voice/s talk about how they look nude or make rude sexual comments (there can be reasons for the patients to not wash for weeks aside from not feeling like it). Smell and tactile hallucinations and seeing things can be added here. The voices being most common followed by visuals. Tactile ones are often a pinch or smack on the leg in bed. Smells are always bad ones never nice ones, (add here that schizophrenics have a poor sense of smell except for when they have this) Visuals like ghosts or shadow people and then insects flying about or even snakes coming out the walls. Sometimes they get internal tactiles, like a brain zapp like electric shocks or popping inside their head.

Undereye circles: cure- is get 2 tea bags, dip them in water and lay them on your eyes for around 5 minutes
Always put eyeliner on your waterline of the eyes
Make sure your makeup isnt cakey
and make sure there is no lipstick/lipgloss on your teeth :]
